These photos aren't by Irene or for her. They exist because of her.
I don't know if I ever would have made it to Berlin if it weren't for her. I first met Irene and traveled to Berlin twenty years ago and I've been going back ever since. The images on this web site are the culmination of a project that Irene and I started work on in the fall of 2000 while walking through the Mitte district in Berlin.
Since my first trip to Berlin I was trying to make sense of this newly reunited city. I decided to use an icon of the old DDR, the Fernsehturm or TV Tower. It was a marker that was visible throughout the area. I could move around with my camera while keeping this landmark in each frame. Irene was my guide throughout this journey.
